Spiritual direction is an intensely personal experience. What you bring to the session, the direction taken in the session and the intensity of the experience is guided by your wishes and desires. My style of spiritual direction is non-directive and contemplative. At the start of each session, I will ask you how you would like to begin this session. You may want to begin the session with a few moments of silence to gather your thoughts; you may request a prayer, blessing, or reading from me; perhaps you brought something with you that you would like to read – a piece of scripture, a reading, or poem; there may be some other way you would like to begin the session; or you may simply want to jump in and start talking. How we start and end the session is your decision.
You may or may not already know what you want to explore in spiritual direction. Perhaps you are seeking a deeper connection to a God of your understanding or seeking meaning in your life. You might be in the midst of decision making about something affecting your life. For your first session, it may be useful to reflect upon what you would like to share with me about your life and faith journey. In spiritual direction, I will listen deeply to all that you are saying (or not saying). I will help you to notice areas of opening, places where there is energy and places where there is block. We are likely to share silence as we sit with, contemplate, and hold all that is on your heart.
At the end of the hour, we will close the session as we opened, in the way that is most helpful to you.
Individual sessions are one-hour in length and typically occur monthly. We may meet either in-person in my private home office in the Southeast Nashville/Antioch area or online via Zoom for those at a distance.
Prior to the day of our session I will send you instructions for connecting to Zoom. You will need a computer/laptop with video and speaker capability and strong internet connection. At the agreed upon time, we will both log onto Zoom and be able to see and hear each other for our session.
I will send the address to you via email prior to our schedule meeting. When you arrive, you will enter the building into a small kitchen area. There are coat hooks to the left of the door. Make yourself at home. If you like, make yourself a cup of tea. You may have a seat there, or in the next room (the library) where your session will occur. In the library, pick whichever chair feels most comfortable to you. Feel free to touch and hold any of the items on the table and tops of the bookcases. There is a bathroom for your use in the hall beyond the library on your right. At the time of your appointment, I will come into the library to start your session.
After a brief (~10 minute) initial phone conversation, we will schedule a time for your individual spiritual direction session. Sessions may be scheduled for your convenience, Monday through Friday, during the hours:
9:00 am – 11:00 am
1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
An alternative schedule or weekend appointment may be available for those unable to meet during these scheduled times.
The fee for an individual session is $60. The fee need not be a deterrent to spiritual direction. We will work out an alternative amount if you are unable to pay the full fee.
If you would like to schedule an initial consultation, please contact me using the web form, by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone (615) 601-1687
